Timothy J. Atkinson, D.D.S.
Dr. Timothy Atkinson was raised in the “Downriver” area of Detroit, Michigan. Upon completing a successful accelerated high school curriculum that allowed him 11th grade, Dr. Atkinson attended the University of Michigan. At U of M, Tim studied Experimental Biology, Environmental Biology, and Engineering in addition to joining the Air Force ROTC.
It has been Tim’s lifelong ambition to become not only a dentist, but also an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (OMS), and he started to fulfill those goals by gaining admission into the University of Detroit School Of Dentistry. Upon graduation, Tim moved to Connecticut spending three years in general dental practice, teaching and completing his General Practice Residency requirements. Following Dr. Atkinson’s general practice residency came his OMS Residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. Following both residencies, Dr. Atkinson became Board Certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Prior to Tim’s affiliation with Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, he returned to his hometown and became a faculty staff member at his Alma mater in the OMS Residency program. While on Geisinger’s Medical staff, he also served on the faculty for both West Virginia University School of Dentistry and Hahnemann University (Philadelphia) OMS residency programs.
Though he was an accomplished professional at this juncture in his career, Dr. Atkinson never lost his zeal for learning. In recognizing a need for dental professionals to also understand the business side of healthcare, Tim obtained a Masters in Health Administration from Wilkes University. In making the move from Geisinger Danville to Geisinger’s Wyoming Valley campus, Dr. Atkinson was able to incorporate his medical and administrative experience and expertise and started the OMS program at Geisinger Wyoming Valley. Prior to joining the Casey Dental team of professionals, Dr. Atkinson also enjoyed his years in private practice in Hazle Township, PA.
Professionally, Dr. Atkinson’s practice includes but is not limited to, dentoalveolar surgery, implant dentistry, diagnosis and treatment of pathological and congenital conditions, and anesthesia; he is also an anesthesia evaluator for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Throughout his academic and professional journey, Tim sailed small catamarans during his time in Connecticut and also traveled to Europe, fortunate and skilled enough, to have sailed the Mediterranean. His well-rounded, genuine nature is most evident and on full display when Tim spends time with his wife Angela and daughter, Victoria – which is of paramount importance to him. Tim has coached pole vault (Victoria is currently a college pole vaulter), mentored grade schoolers in Science Olympiad (calling upon his engineering background) and
Tim is desirous of becoming a PIAA Track and Field Official.
